Okay, the first 3rd was good, the last 3rd was good but the middle was boring and I nearly DNF'd. Unresolved plot points bothered me but okay book

I didn’t expect to cry over a book about beetles- and yet here I am.

Miss Benson’s Beetle surprised me in the best possible way. Joyce’s writing is charming, funny and ultimately gripping.
When I started this I thought I was just going to read about hunting for bugs, but this book is like a beetle’s wings: layered. You start off by learning about Margery Benson, a domestic science teacher with an unfulfilling life. And slowly but surely, the plot builds up in some of the most unexpected ways.

Margery and Enid’s friendship spoke to me and made me wistful for something I have never had. It is a beautiful piece on female friendship and the consequences of war. Highly recommend.

I got this book from the library. Early on there were sentences underlined. I thought that was interesting in a book you had to return. Then there were no marks for many chapters. The then there was maybe one or two more marks and finally the last sentence. I think this says a lot about the book. It's certainly a book that you want to keep reading but it's not full of quotable text. It's message about friendship and finding your true self is one that has deep meaning for me.

After a bit of a slow start, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were so detailed and interesting, and their adventure through New Caledonia was captivating. Inspiring message!
