K Street Killing by Colleen J. Shogan is A Washington Whodunit. Kit Marshall is the chief of staff for Congresswoman Maeve Dixon. It is re-election time and they have tough opposition in Coach Mack Hackensack. That evening Kit, Maeve and Meg Peters are attending one last campaign fundraiser at Charlie Palmer’s before departing for North Carolina the next day. Van Parker, a principal transportation lobbyist, is in attendance along with his wife, Lauren and Dash Dugal, a lobbyist for the American Railway Federation and Meg’s current beau. With only a few stragglers left on the rooftop enjoying the wine, Kit departs leaving Meg to supervise. As Kit is about to get into an Uber, she hears a scream. Kit runs over to find Van Parker sprawled in the alley after a tumble off the roof. Detective Maggie Glass soon arrives to interview the remaining guests and staff. While there are claims of suicide, the detective and Kit are not convinced. Kit needs to solve this conundrum before Maeve’s campaign goes off the rails. Kit must also deal with her husband’s unexpected news. He has a job offer from Columbia that will provide him with some new challenges. It would be a big change for Kit. But first she needs to catch the culprit and get Maeve re-elected to Congress.

K Street Killing takes readers behind the scenes of the Washington political scene. We get to read about the inner workings of a representative’s office and the trials of a re-election campaign. There are a number of legalities the staff must adhere to that I was not aware of prior to reading K Street Killing. I cannot imagine trying to maintain two phones to keep office and campaign duties separate (I have trouble keeping track of just one phone). It made for interesting reading and I could tell that the author had first-hand knowledge. I recommend reading the books in A Washington Whodunit in order. K Street Killing was my first experience with A Washington Whodunit series, and I felt that I was missing out on details especially regarding Kit. I knew that she worked in various political offices in Washington, was currently Chief of Staff for Maeve Dixon, had a dog, her best friend was Meg and was newly married. I would have liked to know more about the main character. I enjoyed the references to Agatha Christie’s mysteries and her various sleuths. I can see where the author obtained her inspiration for the crime in K Street Killing (reminiscent of a movie I watched recently). I thought the mystery was clever. There is misdirection, a handful of suspects and a crafty killing. I would have liked a better resolution of the crime. To hear a confession or the solution directly from Detective Glass. I will admit to enjoying the digs at POTUS. I thoroughly enjoyed Clarence, Kit’s dog, and his antics. His love for food reminds me of my dog, Doozy (who lives up to his name). I wonder what mischief Kit will encounter in the next A Washington Whodunit.

Let me say that politics has never really interested me; too many interests, corruption and affairs, no one ever tells the truth and behave only for their interests. So when I started reading K Street Killing I was sure a Congress member would be killed and that Kit Marshall (the main character) would had to discover the truth. I was a bit mistaken about the victim, but don't get me wrong, he was avaricious, with a lot of enemies and not a very kind man. Of course no one deserve to be murdered, so will say the killer will earn going to prison. But a part from that, while we read this book we will see corruption, affairs, lies and a cute dog that loves to eat! So be prepared for a roller coaster at Capitol Hill!
Let me say that Kit Marshall is a good woman, she loves her job (even if I simply hate it just thinking about it), she is brave and always tries to keep everyone happy around her. This will mean that she will have to "lie" a little to her best friend Meg, about her new boyfriend and try to be happy for her husband Doug's news... lucky for her after solving the murder everything will fit in their place after giving a few headaches to her, of course!
It was interesting how they solve the murder, putting everything together to uncover what really happened and discover the truth, there will be only one casualty in this case, I can promise you.
This had been a quick read, and there are a lot of characters, but it was not difficult to follow their lies and interests...! So, even if this is the 4th book of the Washington Whodunit series, you can read it as standalone.
Ready for a high class murder?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Things in Washington D.C. these days are crazier than ever so there is no more perfect time for author Colleen J. Shogan to take us behind the scenes right before an election and to a fundraiser attended by a bunch of wealthy lobbyists held on the rooftop with a spectacular view. Congresswoman Maeve Dixon is on the committee in charge of the big transportation bill and lobbyists for trucks, trains, and yes, even bicycles want to speak to her so that they get want they want included in the bill. That’s why that have made generous donations to her campaign to attend this dinner.

The candidate has to leave early for one last vote on the hill before she heads home to campaign. She leaves Kit Marshall, her chief of staff, and her best friend Meg to stay at the event to entice the guests to give more to the campaign. Kit decides to sneak out early and when she reaches the street outside she hears screams and rushes to see what happened. It appears that one of the lobbyists has taken a nosedive from the rooftop locale. Everyone immediately thinks suicide, except for Kit and Detective Maggie Glass. They think it is murder. Everyone still at the party becomes a suspect and Meg and Kit are stuck in D.C. instead of following their boss to North Carolina. This death could send the congresswoman’s campaign into a tailspin. Kit finds herself again up to her eyeballs in a murder investigation. If the threatening note she finds on her car is any indication she is on the right track.

Newlywed Kit Marshall is a smart protagonist that doesn’t back down to a challenge and in this story, she has her hands full. A reelection campaign, a murder investigation, and a husband that has just been offered a plum job, but it is not in Washington. She keeps putting her husband off for the time being because if her boss doesn’t win reelection she will need to find a new job. She has never thought about a job outside the beltway. Right now, who pushed Van Parker to his death is her number one priority. I really enjoyed myself following along with her every step of the way. When it is time for the big killer reveal, Kit handles it in a truly classic way.

Ms. Shogan has written another fantastic story that is hard to put down. The characters are well developed and the plot is edgy with plenty of twists. The character’s dialogue is believable and at times pretty funny. We get a wonderful peek at the life of a congressional staffer. Her descriptive writing style brings Washington D.C. to life, from the rooftop restaurant to the congressional office and everything in between.

While this is the 4th book in the series, it can easily be read on its own. Of course, to really get to know Kit Marshall you have to start at the beginning.
