I like this book, it's light and fun and the setting is wonderful. Without knowing much about French politics, I imagine it's a bit of an ode to Mitterand, which a nice way to express appreciation of a politician. Despite this, I did find that sometimes the author seemed seemed frustrated with modern society and only able to articulate this with aggressive nostalgia for the 80s. A good little read but an author that I don't intend to follow any further.

This book is of the wonderful French kind where everyday things such as food, scents, thoughts and love are described in a passionate way. Also, the plot is heavily based on random events and occurrences that cause the paths of many people to cross with each other - even that is somehow a recurring theme in the French books I read. In this one, though, everything somehow manages to revolve around a hat, which belongs to the president.
