I’ll Never Be Young Again is about a man’s journey to maturity, yet I cannot see him mature in any way throughout the book. Overall, the worst book I have read this year.

I loved the first part of this book but was left disappointed by the second part. The first had so much life and adventure, while the second was much more somber and portrayed Richard in a fairly negative light. He turned into a whiny, petulant, selfish child. I understand that this was a part of the story the author intended, but it did not flow as well as the beginning of the book. Though I appreciate how Richard ultimately ended up, I don't necessarily think the story needed to flow in the direction that it did. Who am I to question the story a particular author chooses to tell though? This certainly wasn't as good as Jamaica Inn or Rebecca, but was still mostly enjoyable.

The main character irked me - eventually his misogynist world views turned me off so much I stopped reading maybe 4/5ths of the way through. Not badly written though, and I've not read anything else by du Maurier so maybe the rest of her work is better. Wouldn't particularly recommend this though.

I did enjoy this book but it was a bit slow at first. It did get more interesting in part two when the main character met up with Hesta.

I’ll never be young again is about a young man’s journey to maturity, however next to the superfluous descriptions that no one wanted to read Richard never matures. I realise it’s written in the 1930s, but all what happens is his acceptance of mediocrity. At the start at the book he doesn’t want to be like everyone else, he wants to travel, he wants to discover, in my opinion he is the most mature here. At the end, when he is supposed to be ‘mature’ he accepts his part in society and becomes mediocre.

Another fault is that Richard cannot treat women write, although it’s written in the 30s and women were treated differently then they are being treated now it’s still quite shaking to realise.

Don’t waste your time on this.

Reading a du Maurier after a few months is like coming back home. While I have to say this is not my favourite of hers, I did really appreciate her writing. The first half of the book was brilliant, but the second half lacked a little. I think it was mostly because I couldn't stand Richard.
