not quite as engrossing as the other Antarctic voyage book I read recently, madhouse at the end of the earth, (in the other I really enjoyed the historical / socio-political background of the voyage, and it had such good personal details due to ample diaries, but both are just kind-boggling) but genuinely a riveting journey! as a southerner who feels cold-pain just taking a hand out of glove for twenty seconds to snap a picture, I could not do this shit for even a minute. Frostbite and cold literally freezing the pustules of one’s blisters — just astounding
