How is this only a duology? I need more to this story.

Picking up immediately where the last book left off, this book follows Carmen and her work as a La Vos operative. Her return to the camp isn't as smooth as she hoped it would be, and we realize that there is even more to Carmen than we thought was bubbling beneath her luxurious sapphic surface.
A nail biter of class solidarity and corrupt power leading to an amazing not-conclusion of the Island's story.
Not spoiler: when you finish reading it, look up fan art. It's the best.

3.5

I enjoyed the first book in this series more than the second, but this was also a worthy read. I think a YA audience would really enjoy it, especially the young teen lesbian girls who need role models in their fiction! It's nice to see books that include LGBTQ representation other than "how to I come out to my school?"

I just couldn't get into this book. Perhaps it's the POV, maybe it's a compounding of previous issues. Tried several times, but had to give up.

Better than the first one! Loved it.

So beautifully written. I cried a lot. This book makes you have the feels. Shows you a side of life that maybe you’re unaware of. Heartfelt to the max. Love the back and forth of Spanish flowing in and out of the story.
adventurous dark emotional medium-paced

The first was better but this is still a good book. Now from Carmen’s point of view we get a look at the infamous rebel group “La Voz”.

I’m confused by how quickly things change the second our protagonists enter the plot, like, you’re telling me that this resistance has been around for hundreds of years but the second 4 17 year old girls walk into the plot we can start making substantial change?

And what’s this with Ari? Like Carmen says over and over that the reason she loves La Voz is because they are a family. She’s loyal to the cause and they’re all willing to do anything for the family. But while she’s been gone a reckless guy has been able to weasel his way in without anyone standing up to him? He botched MULTIPLE mission and no one has tried to do anything?

The Vulture’s betrayal doesn’t feel like a betrayal, it’s just confusing. No I don’t believe that the man who raised Carmen and an entire resistance also sold out his people because he was a “coward”.

Carmen almost died to a poison who took down around 9 people but she’s the only one who survived? Because Dani sucked out the poison?? Again she’s a 17 YEAR OLD GIRL, the rest of the people brought down were TRAINED, ADULT SOLDIERS.

Look I like this book, I think it has a lot to say about perseverance and love and inequity. I also think that the conflict wasn’t well thought out.

OH ALSO CARMEN CHEATS ON DANI

of course she had a good reason sHE STILL DID IT

2/5 I’m sorry I cannot get past the plot holes. Love Mari and Lu tho.
