Carmen is the personality. What the hell happened at the end though
A solid enough sequel but overall I felt it was a weak conclusion to the main conflict and I didn't feel as satisfied as the author was probably hoping.

First book ended in such a cliffhanger that I started this one right away! Unfortunately, it almost halfway through the book to get interesting for me. I think the main reason for it is because it’s told from Carmen’s point of view only. As a result we don’t get to see what happened to Dani until way way wayyyy later🥲
It felt like the plot was being dragged on. Almost the entirety of the book is the girls reuniting and then the last few chapters were jammed pack with the actual plot😅

We Unleash the Merciless Storm picks up moments after We Set the Dark on Fire Ends. I won’t go into the plot very much because I don’t want to give away any spoilers from Book One!
In the world of Medio, the island nation is divided by those who worship the Sun God and those who worship the Salt God, the rich and the poor. Mejia’s world building was easy for a newbie fantasy reader like me to pick up. Like Woven in Moonlight, the world is set into a fictional Latinx world that I fell into. I loved the characters and the mythology Mejia created.
We Set the Dark on Fire is told through Primera Dani’s story. We see Dani struggling with the world she has been raised in versus the revolutionary movement called La Voz which has been trying to recruit her. It definitely has some Handmaid’s Tale vibes with arranged marriages of two women (a Primera for running the household and a Segunda for passion and children) to one man. We Unleash the Merciless Storm is Segunda Carmen’s story. I found Carmen flighty and annoying in Book One but in Book Two we see Carmen’s fierce warrior spirit and I fell in love with her.
Overall this duology is an amazing story featuring two strong women and I would love to see more readers on Bookstagram checking it out.
4.5/5 stars

This was a fun read, though I’d echo my review of the first book: the writing was just okay (occasionally beautiful, but other times could have benefited from fluency edits), and the foreshadowing was a bit too heavy. But the characters were fully fleshed out, and I loved the parts that described the community of La Voz. I will also say that my main concern about the first book was fully addressed (and a main plot point) of this book.
