This book was in need of a ruthless editor. It was a labour to plough through the first dozen chapters - far too wordy, brain-numbing narrative about very little. Our “hero”, Fabrizio was foolish & vain, with very few redeeming qualities which made it difficult to have any real feelings towards him. However, things improved dramatically in the second half of the book which was much more readable, and while still finding the whole plot totally implausible, there were excerpts, revealed why the book is considered a classic.
