I really liked this. It’s a quiet dystopian that’s very grounded in reality. The torture and belief that every man with a woman who’s accused of being a witch is enchanted. They also push every woman into being with a man and they can’t be unsupervised with another women due to them being able to do magic. If two men are together it’s due to being witchy.
I liked the topics covered. The witches and dystopian elements weren’t the focus though. It was mainly about women’s place in society (particularly black women) and the complicated nature with the protagonists mother.

This book was hard for me to get into, and I really think the only thing that kept me going was thinking I was already more than halfway through. I struggle with fragmented thoughts used in place of descriptions, which this book used with a heavy-hand. I need things like who-said-what to be clear otherwise I spend the next two paragraphs trying to figure it out and then I have to backtrack, only to question if it even really matters.
Once the tides of the book changed, I was hooked. I knew there was nothing good in Jo's immediate future once she decides that the past is worth revisiting. Surprisingly, there is enough hope in the last 2 pages of the book to combat the immense shadows of reality, which will likely lead to a reread in the future.

I don’t know tf is going on here. Everything is happening at the same time but nothing is really happening.
