I thought this book was really sweet and had much more depth than a typical romance. I don’t know if I’d even call it romance. It’s about two people who meet via wrong number and form a relationship online. They are set to meet but them something unexpected happens and changed everything for both of them. It was sad but sweet and a satisfying ending :)

****Spoilers ahead*****

I didn’t finish this book and I wanted to explain why. Everything after this is a potential spoiler.

I thought I was picking up a reasonably light book when I started this one. Boy was I wrong.

Hannah and Davey have quite the meet cute! He is living in the US and he accidentally calls Hannah in London. He has written down the number wrong for a job he’s applied for in London and reached Hannah by mistake. Twice. They somewhat jokingly agree that Davey will let Hannah know how the job interview goes. He does actually text her later. The interview went so well that he’ll be moving to London in about a month.
Hannah and Davey keep texting, then they start to call each other, then video calls. They allow themselves to get closer to each other in part because they know Davey will be in the same place as Hannah soon. If they fall for each other they can pursue a relationship.

Hannah and Davey admit to their feelings before Davey’s move. They’re half in love by the time his flight lands. Hannah is waiting at the airport with a sign to pick up Davey but he doesn’t show up.

Here’s where the storyline gets really heavy.
Davey contacts Hannah a few days later. She’s been rotating between worried and angry but she’s mostly been worried.
But Davey can’t lessen her worries. There was a valid, and terrible , reason why Davey didn’t show up: Davey is at the hospital. He is soon diagnosed with cancer. He pushes Hannah away. He thinks this is the kind thing to do because they haven’t known each other that long, they haven’t even met in person yet, he doesn’t want Hannah to feel obligated to be there for him, and on top of all of that he isn’t coming to London now. He’s not coming now and he might not come after chemo.
He doesn’t want Hannah to sit around waiting for him to get better, so he tells her he has to completely cut off ties with her.

I can’t keep reading this because I don’t want to read about all of this sadness. The cancer storyline hits too close to home too. We’ve had family members go through it and survive and we’ve also lost cats to cancer (recently) and I just can’t.

I went to read other comments on this book and realized that the ones who stuck with it found the middle part to be frustrating due to a toxic relationship and that the ending wasn’t enough of a pay off for all the time invested.

I was glad to hear that Davey lived and that Hannah and Davey got their happy ending. But it took a long way, and a lot of sadness, to get there.
I read to page 100 in this book. I put it down for the night, trying to decide whether to stick with it. After reading the comments regarding the middle of the book, I just decided to flip ahead to Hannah and Davey’s happy ending. It was about 96% of the way into the book when Hannah and Davey finally meet.
If anyone else wants to just get to the happy part, pickup around the third to last chapter.

I thought this book was going to be a fun rom com and was so surprised by the emotional depth! This book was heart wrenching and beautiful.

I thought this would be just a cute fluffy romance, but it ended up a lot more emotional than expected. There is also a lot of introspection and self discovery along the way. An apt comparison would be Just One Day by Gayle Forman, but for an older audience. I really enjoyed it.

Hannah and Davey's story is so complicated, and so beautiful. I have to say, I really loved the complications that each character faced - Davey with his cancer and Hannah with her unfulfilling relationship and missing/loving a man she's never met. Hannah is that lovely heart of gold personality that you can't help but love, and the fact that she's with some gym-bro douche is maddening. George (the gym-bro) is an all too familiar character that I've unfortunately crossed paths with many times, so he was written with incredible accuracy. Davey, sweet and broken Davey...his fatal flaw of pride? I ate it up.

Overall, I sincerely really loved this story.
