FIRST LINE REVIEW: "Iraky peepl, Iraky peepl." Such a strange, comic novel coming out of Croatia, set at the time of the Iraq War. Just plain quirky, with huge dollops of human insight and pathos. A quick read to one of my favorite countries.

I struggled with this book, oh boy did I struggle with this one!
.
The main character is a sort of mediocre journalist living in the big city who, to get his family off his back, makes the bad decision to send his cousin off to Iraq to be an on thr ground reporter, without telling anyone it was his cousin. The cousin sends some email reports which question his mental stability, then goes AWOL.
.
In the mean time, the main characters girlfriend, who is an actress starts to get quite famous, she's in a play which does really well, and instead of being supportive, the journalist becomes very jelous, and even angrier about the mess he's in at work, taking out his frustration on his girlfriend, something I couldn't forgive him for.
.
The novel is about family loyalties, the conflict between the old and the new Croatia, and I guess also modern masculinity... Why is it a problem if you're girlfriend is going up the career ladder while you're not? (because you're an insecure **** whoes stuck in the past and can't accept gender equality)
.
It's always hard to read a book when you don't like the main character. It's not badly written, or uninteresting, and even the character is well done, I just definitely don't like him. Sorry!

Really glad that I finally read this. Darkly funny look at the spectacle of media cycles in a newly capitalist country.
