The Telling Error by Sophie Hannah

Sophie Hannah writes a series of crime novels whose convoluted plots are matched by the convoluted personal lives of the detectives who solve the crimes. And yet, for the most part, it all works well, and with the ninth book in the series, The Telling Error, Hannah is sure-footed and wields a plot even more complex than usual, featuring a disparate cast of characters and a plot based on internet infidelity.

This was a fun book to read and it’s a pleasure to read a crime novel by an author who’s been writing them for awhile, but who clearly is still enjoying herself. One does need a certain suspension of disbelief in places (the plot and motivations can be stretched at tlmes), but The Telling Error was still tremendously readable.

Nicki is married, but not completely happy and is guilty, but the reader doesn't know what she is guilty of in the beginning. At the same time a controversial columnist is found dead in his home with many clues at his murder and no leads. Nicki gets tied up in the murder investigation, but the reader knows that her guilt isn't to the murder, but we don't know for quite some time until all the clues start to come together.

The chapters alternated between Nicki's point of view and the murder investigation with columns from the victim interspersed. I loved that these two things were kept separate via chapters - it helped get into each story line at a time. The investigation got a little hectic and confusing so I read that chapter a little slower because of all the moving parts and detectives, it was just a lot to take in where Nicki's chapters went smoother.

This book was fine. That's basically it. Not especially interesting or novel or well written. Dull, unlikable characters. It was a fine murder mystery.

Really boring, with a dumb ending.

DNF at 50% on the dot. I just can't anymore with this book.

I don't like Nikki, I think she needs to get some professional help for herself. Aside from that, I found it jarring to go back and forth from Nikki's first person perspective to the detective's third person perspective. And apart from those things, I found that this was more of a windy-for-the-sake-of-winding story rather than an intricately weaved tale. So I'm done. I planned to finish or at least skim through the end to see who did it, but thankfully someone included that in their review so I can walk away from this book happily.

Just meh. There was so much going on and it didn't seem like it was going anywhere fast. It took a looong time (for me) to get through this one, and I read another book alongside it because I just didn't care about finishing this one.

I won a copy of this book through a goodreads giveaway. I couldn't figure out what was going own till halfway through the book and by then I was completely hooked. You can feel the characters crazy come off the pages. This book really did keep me guessing till the end. Highly recommend if you liked hits like The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl.

It's a 3.5, but Sophie always gets rounded up!

It was interesting and had many twists which usually get me hooked on a story. However this book had a multitude of characters and it distracted me too much to say I loved this book.

Review: The Telling Error by Sophie Hannah I received an ARC from the publisher via netgalley in return for an honest review.

I found the story quite interesting and characters were quite likeable. Despite glowing reviews, this book just lacked a little something for me.
