This article landed in my timeline here on GR and I was curious. Growing up in Germany means growing up without Mister Rogers. Which is kind of sad. Her seems like the warm, cozy blanket incarnate. And who wouldn't need that in their life?
Being able to observe the phenomenon Mister Rogers from a comepletely outside position though, no feelings attached, makes it all the more obvious that it is impossible for those who grew up with his show to stay impartial. Junod's portrait is almost completely made up of sentiment, sometimes verging on sentimentality. But how could you write a piece on somebody like Mister Rogers based on numbers and facts?
Overall I can judge this article on highly subjective levels alone: The simplistic style grew on me and I did like the panorama of stories Tom Junod opened up for the reader while frequently returning to his encounter with the man himself. The Christian aspects didn't chime with me so much, but I felt they were coming from a place of morality, ethics, and understanding each other, all things that transcend religion.
I'm looking forward to watching the documentary Won't you be my Neighbor? (as soon as I can get my hands on it) and, of course, the aptly cast A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

I never watched Mr. Rogers as a child, so I never knew him. I only knew of him. After watching A Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood, I was struck by the portrayal of him. So I wanted to learn more about him. This article is the first reading I've done in that pursuit. I am touched by Mr. Rogers' simple love for people and especially children. Every story I hear of him makes me want to be a person who loves more - like Mr. Rogers. This article was a wonderful glimpse into that Mr. Rogers World I want to live in - that maybe I do live in but sometimes have a hard time seeing.
