You Killed Me First by John Marrs is a dark and twisted thriller that perfectly blends suspense with a desperate housewives vibe.
From the cracking good first line and wickedly good first chapter, I was completely pulled in. And Oh My Goodness it was so good. I sometimes felt like I was people watching from the outside. Listening into the juicy gossip. I found myself laughing at the sharp wit while simultaneously disliking the characters for their flaws and attitudes. Wonderful writing, tense, but then the throw away remarks had me giggling. The dark humour was brilliant. The characters are complex and likeable/unlikable in all the right ways, making the story all the more compelling.
It was so unpredictable. The second half of the book completely took me by surprise, with twists and turns that had my jaw dropping page after page. Marrs keeps you guessing with every chapter, never allowing you to settle into any comfort zone, which is part of what makes his writing so gripping.
This book had me hooked from the start and didn’t let go until the very end. The unpredictability, dark humor, and shocking revelations make it an unforgettable read. Without a doubt, this is a 5-star book, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

You Killed Me First by John Marrs is a solid four-star read that delivers a dark and suspenseful story filled with morally gray characters and twisted dynamics. Marrs is a master at building complex characters who are uniquely broken, and this novel is no exception.
What stood out most to me was the toxic interplay between the three protagonists. They each brought out the worst in one another, feeding off insecurities, secrets, and past traumas in ways that felt disturbingly real. The plot is tense and engaging, with a final twist that, while unexpected, felt earned.
Of the three, Anna left the deepest impression. She is the most cunning and intelligent, and her traumatic childhood left permanent scars on her mental health. She's not a good person, but her pain and survival instincts make her someone you can’t help but root for. Liv, on the other hand, feels more like a victim of circumstance. Her strength and loyalty, especially when defending the vulnerable, made her sympathetic. Her downfall begins when she meets Margot, who is hands down the most selfish and irredeemable character in the book. I felt no pity for Margot and was more shocked by the identity of her affair partner than the fact that she had an affair at all.
This is not a light read, but it is a gripping one. If you like thrillers with psychological depth, flawed characters, and plenty of suspense, this book will not disappoint.
