I enjoyed this one! Great world building, slow burn, found family, the works. It left a lot open in the end for the future books, but I didn’t feel unsatisfied with it. It was a pretty quick ending, the climax was just a bit faster than I’d like, almost a bit easy but I’m hoping that there’s a reason behind it that’ll be revealed. There’s definitely a hint of that there.
One of the things that did bother me was how Delilah was just automatically great at everything. Not that she didn’t train for everything but being able to grasp magic that fast? Just slightly annoying. Her dreams also pretty much set the journey. They’d get stuck, she’d have a dream and bam, she had the answer. Just a little to easy for me, but again, I’m hoping her dreams have a bit more explanation as to why it was like that in the coming books.
The one thing I absolutely cannot stand about some FMCs is the the martyr tendencies they have. So quick to bleed out “it’s all my fault, everything’s my fault so I need to sacrifice myself to make it better” when it’s not, but the second someone else does the same thing they automatically say “no it’s not, that’s ridiculous”. It just insults their emotional intelligence in my opinion and I’ve always hated that trope. Here, Delilah definitely has the emotional trauma background to give some leeway to this, but I still can’t stand it. That being said, I still liked her as an FMC, and I’m excited to see her growth. Will definitely read the next!

It just felt like reading ACOMAF. I’m not saying everyone copies SJM, because that is NOT the case, but this book actually does take some scenes straight out of it. Like the nightmare scene, except flames instead of shadow. Or “I only kneel for you” blah blah blah.
not quite as slow of a burn as I would have liked BUT A good storyline, leaving you with more questions than answers which definitely makes me want to pick up the second book which comes out soon!
DNF. For myself, this book felt very juvenile and redundant.

A story within beautiful covers that absolutely begs and calls to be read. A true work of art, making me fall in love with fantasy.
