This book was a pleasant surprise.  I was intrigued by the Netflix trailer for the movie and it really made it seem as a little cliché romance novel a la Colleen hoover, so that was what I was expecting. As other reviewers noted, this is not really a romance novel, more like a coming of age story, with a romance side plot. But to be honest, I think that made the book more enjoyable for me. The book mainly centers the mc’s relationship with her parents and her growing up. In the beginning of the book Auden’s behavior and her thoughts really are a mix of the traits of her parents, her mother’s judgmental outlook on anything female and her father’s selfishness and avoidance of anything difficult. However, thanks to the new friends she makes in the last summer of her “childhood” she learns that her parents are deeply flawed people and learns that things are not as black and white as they seem. The beginning of the book is a bit slow, but by the end I was surprised by how much I had enjoyed reading this book. It’s a good read and I would definitely recommend reading it!

4 stars. It wasn’t like other YA romances I have read, not all sugary and comparable to a donut shop, but more contemplative, with substance. It was great but I wish that Auden and Eli would have spent more time together in the book, also some parts weren't pulling me in to the story, but overall it was pretty good.

Along for the Ride was definitely a...ride...but not always one I wanted to stay along for. I almost stopped reading a quarter into the book from boredom and shock at how anti-feminist the protagonist was. It felt a lot like a projection of the author’s own point of view of all things pink and fashion related. Thankfully, I assumed this huge character flaw was part of Auden’s character arc and stuck with it. I was pleasantly surprised with how Auden slowly progresses beyond her own messed up perspective by the end of it. This was a journey I was glad to be able to witness and the way it unfolded felt natural. I rooted for each character and was glad to see each person have unexpected depth. To call this book a romance, though, feels misleading. I picked up this book looking forward to Auden and Eli’s summer night adventures that the back of the book advertised. I got a taste of it but I was hoping to see more summer fun and feel giddy with Auden, but I was not sold on their love story. This is where I felt the book followed too many storylines (leaving behind Auden and Eli’s) and jumped around more than I wanted to in this relaxing, romantic beach read.
