As a child, on rainy summer days and quiet evenings, I devoured the Readers Digest series. Lowbrow, perhaps, but they did provide an escape and introduced me to the popular fiction of the day. And - let's face it, not all of the selections were deathless prose, so the abridged books cut right to the chase and provided hours of entertainment while my parents and older siblings worked in the family business.
