A book written just for me

Despite the name, despite the book just being a collection of horror movie synopsis's, I still had nightmares. That's how much of a weenie I am.

I felt like the book was really well written, and the synopsis of each movie was detailed. Sometimes there were funny quips that genuinely made me laugh. I enjoyed learning about a genre I definitely did not know a lot about, and seeing how horror has evolved over time.

I'm the type of person who constantly reads Wikipedia articles on scary movies, so this is exactly my kind of thing. I know the author stuck to English-language films for the sake of keeping the book shorter but dang it did I miss seeing them, especially since she talks about The Ring (2002). I did enjoy the discussion of the social issues that movies might have addressed and the inclusion of horror book recommendations accompanying each was fun.

The book I didn't know I needed! I am very much a scaredy cat when it comes to horror movies, but I also can't stand to feel left out of (pop)cultural moments. I devoured this audiobook in one sitting - the writing and narration very much feels like a friend sharing the best details of a crazy story with you. I especially appreciated the juicier tidbits and fun facts shared in the "what to say at parties" section for each movie.

(I received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.)

Definitely read it if…

You’re the titular, easily spooked, nascent horror fan

You generally like movies and enjoy the “best of…” genre of film books

You’re a horror fan who’s already seen all of these and just enjoy reliving them, reading about the cultural impact of these films, and the history of horror cinema more broadly.

This book was composed of brief, entertaining, and informative chapters. I read it very quickly and found something to like about every section. The brand of humor was very much to my taste and I found myself laughing aloud at several points, yes, Johnny Depp’s crop top in Nightmare on elm street is slutty, the Babadook is a gay icon, and FINALLY someone’s talking about Zara’s weird clam shell e-reader from It Follows.

I was at one time the ideal audience for Horror for Weenies. It's a compact, insightful and useful introduction to many of the most influential horror films of the past 60 years. I've long since passed my "weenies" stage and become much more of a horror fan. In deed, many of the works Hughes cites were my own introduction to or nudge along the horror track.

I enjoyed the portions of the book in which she discussed the importance and influence of each film (I will confess I skimmed / skipped the summaries for the films I've seen) and that made me wish she'd write a full book of critical essays or a study on a topic within horror. I also absolutely loved that each film came with three to four book recommendations. I left this book with a handful of new titles on my TBR.

I look forward to her next book.
