A really fabulous primer on horror from the 60’s through today. Hughes has such a gift for breaking down horror films and their tropes to make the plots of the films understandable, compelling and fun. Would love to have some examples of pre-60’s horror or some international horror, but all in all a brilliant little book for the film fan in your life that just can handle horror.

a couple of fun facts! I feel like it lacked more about analysis that I was looking for but still had a fun time

I felt very seen as someone who reads the Wikipedia pages for horror movies, lol! Much more fun reading this, with cultural context and analysis included, than just reading Wikipedia summaries. Still not gonna watch the movies though!

Solid horror film talk. I am NOT a horror weenie, but I found it quite enjoyable as well.

This one is fun for horror lovers and Weenies alike!
I used to be the kind of person who was way too scared to watch a scary movie but was at the same time so curious about what happened, so I would often read detailed reviews or Wikipedia plot summaries to satisfy that curiosity.
Over time, I became brave enough to actually watch some of the movies I read about, and now I love watching horror movies (and no longer need to prepare myself by reading a detailed summary first!). So I was able to read this from the perspective of a former weenie and a non-weenie!
This was a very fun read and discussed so many movies that I love, and I really enjoyed reading the cultural and political context of the films. It made some great points about why we love horror movies, and I definitely recommend this to my fellow horror movie fans. I also think people who feel they are too much of a weenie to watch the movies but are nonetheless curious about them will get a lot out of this book as well!

Hello.
Self-professed weenie here to say that this is an excellent overview of the development of the horror film genre over about 50 years. A fun time and not too scary.
But this is an in-depth look at the plots and making of these films, so if you haven't seen them there are MANY plot spoilers (I, oddly enough, had seen everything discussed up to Blair Witch, and after that I stopped pretending I had to prove my film cred with horror movies and so have only seen Paranormal Activity and Drag Me to Hell after that - this book reaffirmed for me my decision to never watch Hereditary, Y I K E S on bikes)
Would love to see Emily do a vol 2 or a version about books. Would read.
