Winter Kill

Pretty good whodunit and a beginning of a romance. There's a good sense of place when local cop and an FBI agent meet in a small town (or town-adjacent). Also a bunch of memorable characters. The mystery of the killer or killers builds up nicely too.

The story is told from alternating point of views, which I think is a first for me from Lanyon. But these guys work together on the same case so it works well even with a mystery. They have their issues but are pretty evenly matched, and their romance makes sense.

Maybe I still wished for something a bit more, both to the ending of the mystery and the romance, but the book was very engaging, so 4 stars.

È stata una piacevole rilettura. A distanza di anni mi ero scordata alcuni passaggi e confermo che, per me, la storia è valida perché mi è piaciuta come la prima volta.

I am lukewarm on this one. Missing Elliot hours… maybe it’s unfair to compare a stand-alone to a series but I never felt very invested in the relationship in this one. And the murder investigation I thought was decently interesting (when it picked up after Adam fell in the ravine) but then the end kinda ruined it for me. The raven dude was revealed because he killer himself? It just fizzled out I felt like. And then Adam did a total Rachel to stay in the woodlands… it was probably my least favorite Lanyon so far. Now onto the next one though

I really like it.

I love Adam. I love the plot/crime/mystery. I love the other characters. I do not get the insta-love. *shrugs*

I didn't like that I got cheated out of the rescue scene. :( I love them and so often it's fade to black with a time jump instead of showing us the rescue until the usual time jump. :(

An understated romance to accompany the tale of current murder and cold case that seem to intermingle.
I really enjoyed this story. It swept me along and I had no problem with how the plot played out. And since others have mentioned it, I'm a fan of the epilogue, without it I would have felt a little bit bereft.
Definitely one to buy on audio.

The mystery was great, I mean, it's Josh Lanyon, of course the mystery was great. However, the romance aspect was sadly a bit lacking. I liked Adam and Rob, and thought they went well together, but we didn't really get enough time of them actually getting to know each other, just them working the case, and a bout of sex or two thrown in. And that epilogue, while satisfactory on a relationship basis, I supposed, was very out of left field, and just didn't feel true to the characters as we'd gotten to know them thus far. I mean, you don't just

This was a bit different from the "classic" Lanyon yarn - lighter in tone, with surprising dashes of humor that you don't typically get (well at least the ones I've read so far). Regardless, Lanyon's an author whose usual MO goes without too much complaint.

So I'm sure this review reads like all my others because you've got all the requisite JL ingredients.

-Law enforcement MC(s)
-Initial dead body that leads to more dead bodies
-Lust and attraction that just scratches the surface (dammit) with a smidge of smex and feels (more please!)
-Succinctness of plot
-Abrupt happy ending (grrrr)

It works for some reason. I liked it.
