A great book I’ll be thinking about for a long time! For fans of Shakespeare who love lady M, this book gives a new understanding to her complex and powerful character. However, it varies so much from the play that one need not be a Shakespearean scholar to find it captivating. The gothic setting, the intertwining of magic and war, the theme of defining power in new terms are strikingly done. The writing is gorgeous.

A tale of madness begetting madness, that leads to freedom or ruin. The added touches of forbidden romance and feminist ideology creates a modern take on a classic play.

I would recommend reading a summary of Macbeth but it’s not necessary to have read the play beforehand.

I have mixed feelings about this book. There were aspects I really loved like the gothic atmosphere and the prose. But I thought it fell short as a feminist retelling. Firstly, because it is more of a reimagining than a retelling and the main character derived greatly from the Lady Macbeth of Shakespeare. Secondly, because it lacked subtlety with its handling of the female experience and told us more of the characters beliefs than showed us. I think it is a good gothic fantasy but would have done better with less exposition telling us she fears men and removal from Shakespeare.
