“And there is nothing more dangerous than a creature who pretends to be one thing & is in truth another.”

Lady Macbeth was a hauntingly beautiful read, adding depth to an important but little fleshed out character while also providing commentary on societal norms, patriarchy, & misogyny.

Review:
I went into it with decently high expectations & was not disappointed. I loved the background & personality it gave a generally one dimensional character in the play. I always liked Lady Macbeth but wished we had more information about her.

This was my first book by Ava Reid that I read & I found the writing to be engaging. I had so many quotes that I underlined & had stick with me even after finishing the book. Also, why have I not seen more love for Lisander?!

Some people seemed to not enjoy Roscille’s character or found her weak but I did not feel the same. I found her sly & doing what was needed to survive while always keeping an eye on ways to improve or escape her situation. I did wish she was a little older than 17 but also, probably pretty accurate for the time (ick).

the composition of this book was as follows:
50%: weird pseudo-feminism and bemoaning the role of women (a line that inflicted psychic violence on me was “It is essential there be wives… even whores for using though such things must be done with discretion… where do the men of Glammis find their pleasure, feed their appetites? She is so shaken by this…”)
40%: extreme xenophobia against the scottish (there is never a description of macbeth without mentioning his ~savage, brutish largeness~ at one point saying his strength and brutality isn’t even human; he so so big and massive and uncivilized compared to her demure and mannered smollness)
8%: try-hard metaphors
2%: vaguely interesting (the witches were cool, did also like trepanation showing up)

I really enjoyed the beginning, the writing was well done and I cared about Roscille's outcome. I am a fan of the original Macbeth story, and so far this has just been about Roscille's quest for survival (which is a worthy plot) but I just expected and wanted more female villainy. I appreciate the historical rooting of the plot and the mystic elements but overall this is not for me. I would check out this author's work again though.

Thanks to NetGalley and Del Rey for the ARC.

Not the most knowledgeable in Shakespeare plays, but even I can tell that this played fast and loose with the original play. And I am all for the 'death of the author' but the choices for the plot and characters made for a dull story and flat characters. Lady Macbeth is a shadow of the powerful woman she was. It's also abnormally prejudiced against the Scottish? How many times do we need to be told that the Scots are giant and brutish compared to the waifish French girl? Its a shame, because despite this it's clear Ava Reid knows how to write good. There is some beautiful prose in here, but it hard to keep that in mind when you don't care about the plot or characters.
