God just an incredible read. So much sexier than expected, and the power given to lady Macbeth is so so glorious. Def recommend, also ..,..,:,,.. lisander. That’s it. I’m mostly just sad that it’s over

I wasn't sure what to expect but it was... not that. It wasn't entirely terrible. I enjoyed Ava's writing. She has a way of stringing words together into similes and metaphors that paint a vivid picture of both the setting and the character's inner turmoil. I knew this was not a direct retelling but more of a reimagining and a completely different story than the Lady Macbeth that some of us know from Shakespeare.

I wasn't expecting a love triangle of sorts. I wasn't expecting to be completely bored with the romance and going "wait what" at a lot of moments in relation to that romance, especially how it begins. I guess I also wanted a little more character development? And maybe a little more action from the FMC. Pacing was also off, where it dragged initially and then rushed in the last 100 or so pages.

I thought this was gonna be my vibe but it wasn’t for me, sadly.

A few banger one-liners from Reid throughout, but mostly felt empty and like the “moral” lacked subtlety and…not unearned per say cuz Roscille did go thru it but idk I just found myself generally not caring throughout this book.

The cold prose, while great for setting a mood for Scotland in this era, kept the characters at arms-length for me and I struggled to feel passionate about our protagonist :/

Also if you’re coming to this book hoping for a deeper look at the psychology of the unapologetic lady villain & fierce manipulator from Shakespeare’s play…you won’t find that here. I get what the author was trying to do with a whole “that’s the story as told by a man, she wasn’t actually like that” but Lady M in the play was significantly more interesting bc she was using her agency the best she could. Roscille does too but this interpretation of Lady M was nooot it for me.

Lady McBeth is a gothic reimagining based on the Shakespeare play. A story told by the leading villianess herself. Not everything is as it seems.

First we are introduced to Roscille. Multilingual, great memory, and clever.
She was seen as a witch or as witch-cursed due to her unnatural beauty.
It's said her eyes could give her power over men.

In this quick read in the older style there are many feelings of eeriness, masterful planning attempts, twisted moments, and darkness. It's dramatic. Tragic.

I love all of the supernatural elements included within the tale. It truly takes a dark turn that will have you fascinated.

Be sure to check all trigger warnings ahead of time.

Copy recieved was an ARC.
My opinion is my own and is left voluntarily.

"Most men do not need a reason, either. Only an opportunity."

A dark and gritty, atmospheric tale that hits deep.
If you're a woman who has fallen victim to the mistreatment from men, I think there will be a lot of understanding of this story. Let it be a reminder though, that we are much stronger than we're made to think. I wish we all could have compulsion powers to save ourselves...
