King is a master at creating characters you will connect with. Definitely so cringe worthy moments which are made worse considering this was written recently so you can’t really explain away. But King truly has a talent like no other. Gripping plot, loveable characters, complex themes. Plus I can’t help but grin at the references to the shining! If I wasn’t driving as I finished the audio book I would have been inconsolable safe to say I’m in my Steven king era once again and will be reading him until I’m sick.
Would be a good ‘Beach Book‘. Interesting enough story from Stephan King but I could always sense the author was present and adding his topical views to his characters.
Kinda like writing and watching the news at the same time…a lot of bleed over that takes away from the overall story.

Fantastic! Wasn't really sure about the story just from the description on the book itself, but it took some surprising turns and held my attention through out the entire book. Not Kings usual creepy, scary, thriller book but still a wonderful read if your looking for something more crime based but still a Stephen King book.

Wow. Just wow!
Now, I never have doubted Stephen King’s story telling abilities even tho I haven’t read a ton of his novels but that’s only because the horror/paranormal genre is not my favorite.
I thought this book wasn’t going to be an exception to his typical style but boy was I wrong!
The last 3 days I’ve been so invested in this story and cried a lot by the ending but I’d dammed if I said this hasn’t been a full of a ride experience.
I hope he’ll get to write more books in that style.

There were some solid parts but suffers from the usual King issue I have. This could have been 2 books. They don’t always have to be massive stories. I liked the first half and the second half but I got lost somewhere in the transition and couldn’t find my feet again. (This could literally be an excerpt from any of my SK book reviews.)

Reread ending July 14, 2024:
I can’t believe I’ve never written a review for this and was unprepared; I’m in the tub lol.
Billy Summers. Marine sniper veteran. Also killer for hire, but only if it’s a bad person who needs ganked (Dean Winchester).
He’s been offered a shit load of money for this job, and he plans on making it his last; he knows his real identity will come out if he goes through with it. But the guy who usually hires him is acting shady. Which is mind blowing because why on earth would someone who contracts killers for hire be shady? Anyway, Billy does the job and then goes to ground, cutting ties with the people who hired him and helped orchestrate.
And then a young woman is attacked and dumped on the road in front of his hidey hole, and it’s winter and freezing and raining and sleeting. And she’s probably got alcohol poisoning. So he saves her. She doesn’t heal from attack in record time, but Billy does help her. And despite recognizing him she comes to trust him. So when it becomes clear he’s never getting the rest of his money, they go after it.
The ending of this book will never not be a gut punch. It makes me sad and angry. And despite being wildly different from a lot of what SK writes, it’s in my top 10 of his for sure. Maybe top 5 if I consider the Dark Tower series as one, lol.
There is a slightly paranormal thing, in the cabin; the painting. It would be cool if there was a follow up but I’m not real sure what else is waiting to be told.
