Enjoyable read but ultimately I am not that interested in reading about men that think they are different. Give me more Morino!

I have read some pretty dark novels. But this one takes the cake. With six interconnected short stories, each one better than the other, the common vein being serial killers, this book was unputdownable. Yes, I read it within a day and I loved every minute of it.

This book enumerates the escapades of two high school students who have the magnetic nature to attract serial killers. Either they investigate them or are singled out by murderers as their next victim. Each short story has a unique narration style, which kept me guessing who the narrator is, and because of this, some of the twists were mind-bending. I had a couple of OMG moments.

At first I found it unbelievable that a couple of kids could encounter so many serial killers, not just hear about them but also meet the perpetrators, within a short span of time and get away with it. In my experience, murders and serial killers are very rare, unless one works for the police or in an investigative capacity. But OTSUICHI has a perfectly sane explanation for this, which made the reading experience even better. (This spoiler I am not willing to reveal). This book has two Afterwords, and if you are one of those who skip them, I would advice you not to, because you will gain a world of knowledge.

Japanese Magical Realism and dark fiction has a quality of its own, which is intense and so believable, that it lodges itself within our memory and it feels like a roller coaster ride with no escape.

This book is released under the genre - Light Novel, which is a style of Japanese young adult novel primarily targeting high school and middle school students. But I wouldn’t recommend this one to young impressionable minds because of the graphic murder scenes and live burials. Ask me, I had a tough time sleeping last night!
