The influences of the writers is clear, but it doesn't taint the awesome writing and art.

The art is just fantastic through the whole thing. Easily the best part of it. The writing was pretty good too, I think it just lacked an interesting and compelling plot. It just felt like setting up the world and characters mostly, which is fine for the first book, but I hope it goes more in depth in the characters and their emotions than this one did. I didn't really feel he felt the loss of his father's death. He just got angry briefly and then seemed to move on. At least that was what it felt like. Still, I might continue with the series and see if the plot improves. The art alone may be worth it.

I'm a big fan of the Hellboy movies even if they are a bit camp and definitely have their holes. It may be that I'm just a huge fan of Ron Perlman, cause I am, I love him.

Hellboy Volume 1 is pretty much the thing that the first movie is inspired and based upon. You are more inside Hellboy's head and I'm not going to lie, his voice sounds like Ron Perlman's.

I love that the only information you have is what he has given you because that's all he knows. The writing style is personal, almost like you are being told this in a film noir setting. The art style is great. I always open to a random page after finishing because I'm really good at making the pictures form a movie while I'm reading. The graphics match the mental movie I created so well.
I have the second one. It took me a while to find this first volume but I'm glad I persevered.
