I cried at the end. Every character is so bloody unlikeable, the relationships quite toxic, and yet you kind of can’t help but root for some of them.

I don’t think this is actually that amazing of a book, it’s certainly not life changing. But the ending still got me and it sucked me in, in that way watching reality tv does.

The way I feel about this book in the moments after finishing it feel like an oxymoron, I feel emotional yet all I’ve done is complain about it. I think it’s the sort of book I’ll think of occasionally but never plan on re-reading.

I also hated the first 3ish chapters of this, the initial set up was incredibly boring.

Edit: upon reflection I’m pretty sure the reason I cried so much was pms and sleep deprivation

I was truly shocked by the end of this book. Once again, this is another book I did not expect to go in the direction it did. It was actually really well written and using Evelyn’s seven husbands as a way to tell her story is a genius idea.

I would never say that this book surprised me. But it’s not necessary for the type of book this is. In fact it’s actually a credit to this book that I was never surprised. Everything that happens has its purpose and is a consequence of a choice made.
This is a tragedy through and through and while I did not feel sad I was broken-hearted
Great book

I thought that the overall story line was enjoyable and interesting. The pacing is well done and the writing is interesting and engaging. However, I did not think that the bipoc characters were written in a manner that was authentic or compassionate, which was my main grievance with the book. The main character's own Cuban heritage seemed like a tacked on afterthought or a shallow attempt at diversifying the cast rather than an actually aspect of her identity. And the inclusion if LGBTQ+ characters almost seemed to be used as a driving factor for trauma and hardship rather than a commentary on the complexities of social expectations and love, which the author seemed to be trying to convey. It was not a poorly written book and the story line was intriguing, however, I felt that the execution and portrayal of certain groups of people was poorly done.

A beautiful and tragic story about the LGBTQIA+ experience from the 50's to the modern day through the lens of a daughter of Cuban immigrants trying to make it big in Hollywood. It's an amazing story that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I will definitely read it again.
