I didn't enjoy the main character's internal monologue and the book had too many references to thinness equating to beauty in the first chapters of the book.

I went into this book knowing nothing, and right from the beginning I couldn't put it down. I read this in a single day--less than twelve hours, during which I had things to do (like, uh, work). I really enjoyed almost everything about this book, and would definitely recommend it, especially for the queer aspects and the way it brings together the past and present in the end.

Old Hollywood is a great setting for romance. Peeking behind the curtain to see what scandals are and aren’t talked about in Hollywood is fascinating.

I absolutely adored this book. It made me laugh, cry, gasp and cheer out loud! It reads like you’re watching a fantastic biopic. The characters were so well written that I felt like I was a part of the story sometimes, which made me so sad to finish this book. Great LGBTQ and BIPOC representation. Great stand alone novel. I will be recommending this book for years!!

I love and feel such a connection to Evelyn Hugo, despite her flaws and obviously having a much more difficult and dramatic life to me. I feel it wrapped up very nicely and was both much how, and nothing at all, like I predicted it to end.
Everyone in this book is so deeply complex and well written and I love them all but they all give me grief and headaches. And I can't think of anything more real than that.
It feels like Marilyn Monroe, every devastating Taylor Swift song  and the heartache of being sapphic came together and wrote a book.

Some Evelyn quotes to further inspire you to read this masterpiece:
to be honest, I would have thrown every single one of them in front of a moving train to get a part. And I think they would have done the same to me.

Be wary of men with something to prove.

Heartbreak is loss. Divorce is a piece of paper

All this being said I do have one issue with this book that I have yet to see addressed.

TW: eating disorders, fat shaming,
suicide

Throughout the book there were instances that promoted valuing being thin, and doing what it takes to get that, and moments were characters look back in shame on moments were they were chubbier. Was not a fan of that at all. I kept waiting for the book to address it, for it to say something reflective about Evelyn and Celia's subtle eating disorders, for it to be something Evelyn regrets in a way, or at least discourages. This book is very heavy on talk about body and using your body and what its value is, and I never ever saw a warning on any recommendation videos I saw. That was strange to me. I also feel like there should've been more mention of Evelyn's decision at the end of the book.

It’s a very well written book and I do genuinely recommend it with all my heart. However, it is not void of flaws. I strongly recommend seeking out some opinions from POC (especially Latinx and Black POC) about this book and how it talks about race before reading it.

I didn’t expect to like this book, but it was actually quite enjoyable. It’s written in a very accessible manner and reads easily. The plot is quite interesting and I didn’t expect the twist at the end.
