I think it was a very interesting biography of a complicated woman. You really grow to care for Evelyn and her struggles as well as her undeniable strength and tenacity. She was a really compelling main character but I found Monique and her story to be somewhat uninteresting. I didn’t find I had the same emotional attachment to her character and struggles so the ending actually fell a little flat for me from both of their character arcs.

there’s definitely a lot of moments here that annoyed me or didn’t feel quite right (stories, especially those written by straight people, where one person in a same sex relationship is pressuring the other to come out, will never sit right with me) but i’ve gotta admit that there’s something so special about this book. the characters all just feel so real. it’s almost jarring to finish it and remember we live in a world where evelyn hugo does not actually exist. from the moment her narration starts you get swept up in her, everything about her life not only super engaging but so utterly real feeling. minor complaints here or there aside, i can see why everyone was so obsessed with this when it came out. really easy book to connect with. deeply felt.

Oh... my god. This book was emotional. The characters were complex and sometimes you wanted to throttle them but they're flawed and human.
