The book was slow and a little boring in the beginning, but the ending and conclusion made it all worth it. This book showcased great loves, friendships and complex human nature perfectly.

I would have given this book 5 stars if Monique hadn’t been so terribly rude and annoying. I almost DNF’d the book at 30 pages  because she was so horrendous. I don’t understand why she felt she could speak the way she did to ANYONE. She was caviler with words & didn’t interpret things correctly, ever. Evelyn had to continuously correct her. I know the reason why Evelyn didn’t drop Monique as a writer, but she should have just told Monique the truth. Then, gotten a better ghost writer for her memoir.

Now, I loved Evelyn. Her story was just constant heartbreak. It’s hard to reflect on the fact that she only truly WANTED two of the seven husbands. It was hard to watch her struggle with her sexuality vs society and it’s scrutiny. It’s amazing that she went through everything to just have a job she loved AND a partner she loved. But it was so hard to maintain that love and happiness. I’m so happy she got to live and love in Spain.
I also loved Harry & was devastated by how he passed. I cried abou the funeral. And it was tough to like Celia. But Monique I could absolutely have done without.

Big breath, okay.

I'm writing this after just finishing this incredible novel and there are still tears drying on my face because THAT ENDING.

If I could rate higher than 5 stars I would, this story is beautiful. Jenkins Reid has crafted a suite of characters that are so completely human, complex and evolving, lovable and flawed. A story of love in all its forms, of survival and the way the wounds of our childhood stay with us. Of the pain of living in hiding and in fear. Of a life filled with love, struggle, and loss.

Evelyn Hugo is a bisexual icon and my heart hurts for her and the many real people who lived and continue to live now in hiding. As a bi+ queer myself, this was so powerful that it left me teary. Don't we all want to find our Harry and Celia?

Lastly, I love the way Jenkins Reid writes Evelyn telling her story. It reads like someone sharing their truths and, in its telling, reveals even more about Evelyn's incredible character.

100/10 would recommend!

I enjoyed the deep character development and the way the plot came together. Also loved the LGBT+ aspect. Highly recommend.

This was such a beautiful look into how much life can change in the span of just a few years, and how complex human relationships are. That love comes in so many shapes and sizes and your entire life can be turned around by just one decision is so beautifully highlighted here. It’s well-loved for a reason!
