Evelyn is half of what we want to be, and half of what we hate. At least, it seems that thought was the intent. Identifying with Evelyn is specific on an individual level; no part of me wants anything close to her life, beauty, influence. However, TJR persuades the reader that they might anyway. Complex characterization and a strong narrative contrasts a simple writing style. Living in the head of a superstar is so far removed from most people's experiences, yet this book is accessible. I like that there is no happy ending, nor a necessarily tragic one. That's how life goes. An absolutely quotable novel.

I started listening to the audio book because I did not no what else to read, and I wanted to give this tiktok-trending book a chance. I had little expectations coming into the story, and I was very pleasantly surprised. To my mind, it was interesting to learn more and more about Evelyn Hugos strategy to reach her goal of succedding in the movie industry. The way she recognized the power of her physical appearance in relation with men, and how she used her sex appeal towards men to use them in her interest was fascinating to focus. Personally, I navigate through our patriarchal world very different from that, so it was an expansion of my horizon to see her in a learning process of maintaining and growing her independence in an industry that is largely driven by men. In a way, it made me acknowledge that as an empowering, feminist approach in life.
Also, I loved to see that a fictional biography of a celebrity contained a chapter on a queer family system at a time where LGBTQ+ rights took in much less space in public than today, and that the love story between the main character and her love interest featured a lesbian and a bisexual women. It gave me a lot of hope in the mainstream booktok audiences and for more valuable bisexual representation and visibility.
