At first i was captivated by the story, it was a book i couldn't put down, it was very inspiring to read the growth in Evelyn, and it made me cry in some parts, its a story that doesn't finish with a happy ending, and you dont love all the characters  (or at least, all the time) so, realistic. I can understand why most people love this book, even though, i finished it with a numb feeling. I would say that the good parts are in the middle, because i couldnt really connect with the story of Monique, so in the last part i wasnt that fazed.

It was a little slower than I would have liked, BUT this was an absolutely beautiful book! The storytelling was on point, and the way in which the author made us both love and hate Evelyn Hugo was brilliant!

I liked the over-spanning discussion of the ambiguity of character and actions, Evelyn's portrayal, her work ethics and un-ethics, her sexuality, probably the most. The writing style was easy to follow and could perfectly capture the essence of whatever was presented.

I did not dislike the plot twist at the end, but it didn't really add anything to the main story for me. It felt like an attempt to find something to connect both main characters in a meaningful way and therefore didn't really catch me.

Overall I really enjoyed the book and find that it has many important scenes.

Evelyn Hugo and the people through her life were all so complex and incredible to read, but I would say our framing character Monique fell a little flat. Maybe it's because we only got a small glimpse into her life, but it felt like she learned and applied the lessons from Evelyn's life so quickly and efficiently it didn't have any payoff for what she was dealing with (until the end). I love Harry and how kaleidoscopic queer love can be, how it can easily lie outside the bounds of simple labels. Evelyn Hugo is so layered and complex and fascinating in how she will get what she wants in any way she can.
