What a truly exceptional sequel! From beginning to end I was enthralled in the continuation of the journey and love with Andrew and Jamie. New friends and new challenges set the perfect backdrop for the bond between these characters to truly blossom into something special. Highly recommended for anyone looking to explore a love story of epic proportions.

I finished The Only Light Left Burning by Erik J. Brown, the sequal to All That's Left in the World.
I was uhm, pretty disappointed with this book. The first book was 4.5-5 star read for me so I went into this with high expectations but no, I didn't really enjoy it? I honestly kind of think I would have preferred for the story to end in the first book. I didn't like a lot of the plot in this book or how the characters were acting a lot. I did still love the characters but I felt like they were changed? I mean, I guess that does make sense in a post-apocalyptic world where you have to fight for your survival but it still wasn't great to read.
I don't like how almost this whole book is about differences in opinions and thoughts between Andrew and Jamie, how they were on different pages often. It felt like they reversed roles even. I'm not sure I loved the ending either. I don't feel Jamie wanting to kill that man was about revenge. Jamie wouldn't have been able to feel safe without him being dead. After everything he had done, I don't feel like it was wrong to want him dead, to want to protect everyone he loves. I mean, I guess it was to maintain is "kind" personality? I don't know. I just felt like the characters personalities changed and swapped. I'm not not a fan of how the matter of sex was brought up and even resulted in a conflict but then it was never talked about again. I would have liked to know it actually happened, that Andrew could relax about his fear about Jamie's bisexuality when it counts physically. I do like how side characters got happy ish endings and that Andrew and Jamie were able to get what they want in a way? Sadly they aren't able to be around all the kids but The Kid is only ten miles away and there is a small sense of community that Andrew can feel close to while Jamie can be happy it's just them two in the cabin.

Oh lord. I didn’t realise how attached I had become to the characters in this book and all of their stories.
In comparison to the first book, this definitely had a lot more action and combat which I thoroughly enjoyed. There was never a dull moment.
However, that obviously brings with it plenty of pain and loss. This is definitely the darker book of the two, but that’s inevitable considering their new reality.
Brown did an impeccable job wrapping up Andrew and Jamie’s journey/s. Such bittersweet feelings about finishing this one. I’m not ready to say goodbye yet…
