The story of this book was very off putting for me. A loner on space? Like some of these 70s chatastrophic movies only on a far away planet and not a plane. But after having heard that many good things about it I gave it a try and was I wrong!
The story is interesting, thrilling and seems genuine in an odd way. The tone is so funny that I had to chuckle many times. And you learn something along the way.

Okay but this books reads different when you’re in quarantine. Never did I ever think I would be able to relate to the left behind space castaway, but instead thought I’d get to just read a fun book. I recommend this one, especially right now.
While my husband hoovered this book in a matter of hours, I savored it. It was so good I didn't want it to end. The narrator was someone who I wanted to root for. Everything about this book was aces.

Had quite a bit of fun, with few complaints!
Story-wise, I'm not sure that this really broke new ground (though Watney sure did), I still very much enjoyed my time. Scarce setting descriptions, though I'm sure more would not have helped, given how bleak and plain Mars' landscape is. Characters showed zero real growth, plot kept things active and moving along.
