Be aware that this book has pretty much all the trigger warnings. It is a really hard read but also beautiful and haunting and will linger in my head for a long time to come.

“But boys will be boys, our favorite phrase that excuses so many things, while the only thing we have for the opposite gender is women, said with disdain and punctuated with an eye roll.”

I really love this book. It’s a very difficult read, but it’s so important. It examines rape culture in many different ways. I honestly really liked Alex as a character. She was interesting and I loved seeing how she was growing as a person. Jack for the most part I liked, but he made me uncomfortable and annoyed at parts(the point). I really loved his and Alex’s relationship. I did enjoy peekay as a character as well and her friendship with Alex, and Sara and Alex and peekays friendship.

I am wrecked. This book wrecked me.

The Female of the Species is HEAVY and dark. It's very real. Because of this, there are some very heavy themes and content warnings going in, so be prepared.

It's a dark look into what rape culture does to all of us, who it hurts, who perpetuates it, and what it can do to our society as a whole. Spoiler alert: it's not a good look. I don't want to say more in case of spoilers, but I loved how it handled "girl hate" in that it did not allow for girl hate. It moved me, and I wish I had had this for myself throughout high school.

In summary, read it. I highly recommend, not just to teens or young adults, but parents and educators as well.

TW murder, sexual assault, rape, slut shaming, gore, violence, gun violence, animal cruelty, animal death (dogs, particularly), cheating, alcoholism
