Soooo, it was good? like the writing and character development is beautiful but thats not how it was advertised to me so i’m a little disappointed. It follows the AFTERMATH of an event which is annoying because you dont get to live the event so its falls flat in the action/mystery sense… which is what I expected. Also, the end felt rushed for shock factor
I get why it happened, my mum always says two wrongs don’t make a write and even though Alex’s action were of very good/necessary intention (imo) she still needs to be punished for committing a crime yk

This book is a teen romance. There are some graphic parts, but overall I was disappointed. After hearing about how brutal and gruelling this book is, I was excited to read a rape revenge story that made my gut twist. I am over halfway through the book and there have only been a handful of graphic parts that are PG-14 at best. So much of the story is the teen relationship between Alex and Jack, and so much of Jack’s dialect about Alex is “she’s not like the other girls”. I really wanted to like this book, but I am bored and will not be finishing it.

This is one of my favourite reads this year. “The Female of the Species” provided a look into rape culture, and the fear and trauma caused by it. I found myself relating with the three main characters, and got truly invested in their stories. The author creates a great atmosphere, and writes  many impactful lines and paragraphs that really resonate and make you think. There are strong messages throughout the book that are relevant in today’s society. Although one problem I had was how the ending felt sort of rushed. It felt as though the ending message was sort of squeezed out. Otherwise a fantastic book and a must read for young women.
