The 2007 hype for Clary and Jace is VERY much alive in my 2023 life.
Also, Cassandra Clare ATE with this book.

Ugh, just as amazing as I remembered it.
I always forget the humor in Cassie Clare’s books, but that’s okay, because it makes it that much more fun to read and reread.
Simon isn’t a vampire yet, which I thought happened in the first book.
I also thought that Jace and Clary didn’t find out that they were “siblings” until like the second book. LOL whoops.
It’s also kind of fun comparing what’s happening in the books to certain scenes from the TV show— okay, look, I know it had its problems and it wasn’t the best, but I actually kind of liked it. And of course, #MALEC, DUH!

Derivative and trope filled, but not a bad read. The first half of the book was kind of a haul, all of the characters were essentially not people you'd want to know. But once they went to Magnus' party, it kind of didn't matter. But how the heck did this get popular? Why should I even ask that, given the viral nature of popularity in books.

This book completely met up with the hype and I'm just so in love with Cassandra Clare and the Shadowhunter world. I can't wait to finish this series and then move on to the Infernal Devices series!

Reread in September.
Never again. I should have DNFed at the 20% mark with all the "I'm not like other girls" trope, but I kept going, and everything was worst.
I hated Jace and Clary; they deserved each other. I loved Izzy, as always. But I hated Alec. He was annoying. Magnus was creepy with all the "hot for a teen" act; it was worse than I remember. Simon is the worst; he is the nice guy that it's only friendly to get you to be with him. He got mad that she was kissing Jace when he never said he was in love with her! He was angry at her because she didn't read his thoughts and decided he would stop being friends because she didn't give him what he wanted. Because he was only friends with her as a long game for sexual favors (I'll stop because I can rant about this forever). I cannot believe that I used to like this guy; proof that we are all stupid at that age and shouldn't be making life-changing decisions.
The only reason that I finished and gave it two stars was that the plot was good.
If I recall correctly, in the fourth book, the characters are likable. So maybe I'll keep going.
