The characters are unappealing, but Eliot's magic peaks through in her understated mocking of human behavior. There isn't much plot development, and the story ends abruptly, but there are some amazing wry observations of human behavior in the mix.

another read for my english class!!

brother jacob has been my favorite one we’ve read so far. i think it’s technically a fable, but it really reminds me of the parables i was taught growing up. very interesting. kept me engaged the entire time which is hard to achieve with classics!

I mean, it was fine – I'm surprised that (at least on this site) it seems so unilaterally disliked (one of the lowest ratings I've seen out of the things I've read?)

I mean, it wasn't all that deep, and was somewhat predictable, but so are many books, right?
As predictable as any classic tale of tragedy. And it wasn't /badly/ told, and had some bits of society commentary – other people found these to be the good bits; I found them just okay, possibly even detracting from the overall atmosphere/feel of the text.

At any rate, I thought it was a fine short story, even if not that memorable.
