I was interested in learning a first-person perspective of the Chechen wars, but I didn't expect it to be this engaging. I'm not sure how scholarly or rooted in reality it is, as this read at the pace and tone of an action movie, but it was massively engrossing. At no point does Lilin become indulgent in what he's 'experiencing,' but it's interesting to see the common threads between this and other combat stories from the American perspective. Overall, pretty glad I read it, and appreciative of the slivers of humanity that showed through in the blood and chaos. Read this if you're OK with descending into the less savory parts of the human experience every now and then.
