Poirot is on vacation at a hotel on an island. He likes to people-watch and get to know the other tourists at the hotel, but he becomes uneasy when he sees a married lady flirting with another man who is also married. The entire hotel is gossiping about the affair when the lady turns up dead on the beach. Did her husband kill her in a jealous rage, or did someone else have motive for murder?
As always, I completely adore Poirot! In this book, he is putting together all the little clues and finding out who is lying and why. Many of the hotel guests have secrets to hide - witchcraft, drug deals, jealousies, and hatred. Several of them are certainly lying in their testimony to the police. But which clues are important to the murder investigation, and which are only red herrings?
Unfortunately, I had already watched the TV episode of this mystery before reading it, and so I already knew the ending; but that did not diminish my enjoyment of the story. It was still really wonderful to revisit this mystery and see all the little clues laid out in order.
The mystery keeps you engaged right up to the end, and then all those little pieces fall into place so neatly when Poirot explains everything. I love Agatha Christie's writing and the way we analyze everyone's personalities. All the characters are so memorable and different with their own little quirky traits.
I really liked the psychological aspect of this story. There aren't many concrete clues, and so Poirot relies on his ability to analyze each person's personality. Are they the kind of person who would do this or that? Was the deceased the kind of person who would do this or that? A lot of the focus is on the personality of the deceased lady and her influence on everyone else. Poirot goes around asking each person's opinion of the deceased, and he gets a multitude of conflicting answers. None of the women liked her because she was beautiful and flirted with all the men. Some say she was just misunderstood, some say she was an evil home-wrecker. His little gray cells must work to discover the truth behind all these different impressions.
Agatha Christie's writing style is just so phenomenal, and Poirot is one of my favorite detectives of all time!
