Christie is a master. Who else can explain so deftly all the little clues littered through the novel so everything fits so neatly? I like the way she uses flawed persons as characters but still treats them with respect. Poirot is also a protagonist you love to follow down the rabbit hole.

fun beach read vibes- not a very good mystery tho

Definitely one of Poirot's best cases, in my opinion. I thought I knew where it was going from the start (based on... a certain older story of Agatha Christie's), and it turned out I was wrong! Or rather, I got one half of the solution wrong, which was still a pleasant surprise. I loved the summery setting on a beach resort, the characters were interesting, and of course, the mystery itself was brilliantly done even if it wasn't all that complicated in the end. But then again, that's one of Christie's talents, to make things look simple only in retrospect, when you find out what happened, and not before.

I just wish the last couple of paragraphs had gone in an entirely different direction—after such a fantastic ending, the last thing in the world I wanted to read was a man demanding that a brilliant woman give up her entire career in order to marry him, and her casually accepting right away... yikes. This was clearly being framed as a sweet romantic moment to end the story on a hopeful note, and it had the exact opposite effect. Between this and The Man in the Brown Suit, I'm learning to be wary of romantic relationships in Agatha Christie's novels... sometimes they work and sometimes they don't, and when they don't, it's usually because the man is a sexist jerk.
