3.5 stars. Good, but would have been better shorter.

I really don't know about this one. It was easy to read and I got through the whole thing in two days so that's some credit to the plot. Like with my other Karen Rose read, I enjoyed the originality and complexity of the main criminal plot and I think she manages to both hide the identity of and write the perspective of the killers well.

My main issue is a lot of things felt rather cliched- the way Eve and Noah spoke to each other especially. I understand they're both 'tortured souls' I do, but I found most of their relationship frustrating to read. The constant "they'll never understand" inner monologue in particular. Again, in the last book of the author I read- I'm Watching You- I think the relationship between Reagan and Kristen was well written, the build-up made sense. In this, I just couldn't enjoy it.

Also Eve, I know I'm meant to like you and root for you but I really can't.

I can see why this appeals to so many people but for me, it just falls short. It is decent and the main plot is great to read, but at points, it felt too complex or too broody longing from a distance for me. At 600 odd pages as well, bit much.

I liked this book.

This book was about Eve conducting a study for her thesis, and when she notices something strange with the data, she breaks the rules. At the same time, Noah is called to a new scene and finds some things suspicious so he wants to confirm with his partner (Jack), who has become increasingly worse at his job and doesn’t show up. Eve and Noah know each other because Eve works at a bar where Noah sometimes comes with Jack, but both of them have reservations and neither has said anything about their attraction to the other.

The plot was really interesting, and I liked seeing all the different POVs. I did manage to guess who the killer was, but it was still interesting to see how the police would find him.

Eve and Noah’s relationship was a bit in the background (mostly because Eve kept saying that she was too broken to have one), but I still liked seeing them trying to find more clues and trying to connect the dots.

I liked this book, but I still wanted to see more scenes with other characters when it wasn’t about the case. For example, I wanted to see Eve and Noah going to Brock’s for dinner. Also, I’m interested in seeing how this case will affect Jack in the future.

I Can See You
3.5 Stars

Series note: This is book #10 in Rose's romantic suspense series, and while the mystery is standalone, the characters from books 1 through 6 play important roles. However, there is no need to read books 7 through 9 as these are unrelated.

Although this installment is a significant improvement on the last couple of books, there are still some problematic elements.

The serial killer plot is gripping from the start with a suitably malicious villain. That said, some of the red herrings are exceedingly obvious and the killer's identity is relatively easy to guess from the abundance of clues.

The inclusion of elements from the online gaming world is also compelling. Rose manages to explain the concepts in an easy to understand manner without bogging the reader down with dry and boring details.

Eve and Noah are an appealing couple. Both have suffered a great deal, but have overcome all obstacles with strength, determination and resilience. One cannot help but admire how far they have come. Eve and Noah also have great chemistry; however, their slow burn romance takes to long to come to fruition. By the time they get to a place that they are comfortable enough with their attraction to act on it, I had more or less lost interest.

In sum, a solid installment in the series, but it is clear that Rose's writing is skewed toward the suspense rather than the romance.

I enjoyed this. So much tension and a great mystery. I started guessing who the perpetrator was earlier than I normally do in these kinds of books, but it wasn't too easy. The relationship between the two main characters was interesting and I could definitely see myself reading other books in the series.

I received an ARC of this book (far too long ago) in exchange for an honest review.

Closer to 3.5 stars. I liked it enough that if I see some Karen Rose books I'll pick them up.
