What if I said I liked the third book more than the second? But it’s important to point out that I was almost entirely focused on the political aspect and I don’t really care about romances. Colonial resentment is never enough for me (I NEED there to be resentment and anger against colonizers and you’ll never see me criticizing a character for that), and Bryce here made more sense with the first book than whatever she was in the second.

A note about romance aspect, despite what I said earlier about it not being my priority: Despite a lot of things I’ve read over the last year, in this book I found the conflicts between Hunt and Bryce quit plausible. And just the fact that they both think about how they might be affecting each other (and here I can’t help but compare them to Nessian, where Nesta blames herself for everything and feels bad even when she has a right to be angry, and Cassian focuses on how she might reject their mating bond and how that will affect HIM, but nothing more), already makes them a much healthier couple than any other in the Maasverse. I like Quinlar and their dynamic, but I don’t really care about the other couples.

Although Sarah dumped several events, possibly aiming for development in a next book, have left aside several characters to focus on others, just as I would rather rip my eyes out than have to read another chapter from Ithan or Tharion’s POV, overall I liked the third book more than I thought I would.*

A note about the crossover: Nesta Archeron has always been and always will be THE BEST character written by Sarah Janet, even if that was never the author’s intention. I love you, I love you, I love you. I was kicking my feet every time “Nesta” appeared on the page. My wife having enough empathy to contribute as she could to saving another world (consequently helping to save her own) instead of protecting just one city (cough cough) in a much larger kingdom. A queen who needs no crown indeed. I also liked this personality Sarah finally decided to create for Azriel. Rhysand... the hypocrite that you are. At least it was clear that it runs in the family, considering he’s a descendant of Silene. Cassian... I hope that by the next book you’ll simply disappear.

*I actually gave it two and a half stars, but I had to round it up. Just because I liked it more than the second one doesn’t mean that this book has fewer problems, quite the opposite.
