Yes, it was creepy. Yes, it all came back to reality. The detective is craggy, moody, repressed, and yet desirable. Snort. The women are all strong and cold and harsh, and also manipulative. Meh. Then there is the under story, a separate mystery/conflict, that added little and annoyed much.

It was a teeter-totter of a book, the atmospheric writing marred by callous women and ridiculous heroes. I liked it, but at the end I couldn't say I wanted to read more.

heh. apparently I read this in 2013, and it didn't stick with me. So I reread it in 2015.

For the first time since being on Goodreads I wish we had a half star. This book is probably more of a 3.5 rating than 3 but no where near a 4. The story starts again with some familiar characters and the relationship between them. I love the two main characters in this book and their relationship and dynamic is what keeps me reading the series. I have to say if you are reading this as a standalone you will not have this connection and may find this a tedious part of the story. There is a nice conclusion of what happened to Flea after the last novel which I greatly enjoyed.

The problem with this book is you have to read half way through it before the crime starts being investigated. It then feels that the story is rushed into the last 100 pages. The rest of the book is really just padding and this makes the story slow to start. Once however, it gets started it really goes with a bang. The last 100 pages are really fast paced and in one place I found myself gasping out loud to something that was written. There are parts when this book is plain gruesome which really adds to the story.

At the conclusion of the novel both the main crime and the characters stories seems to come to an end. However, there is just enough left to make me want to read the next story to see where the characters take their relationship. Not as good as the others but doesn't put me off the series.

If I could just read Mo Hayder & Tana French to the end of my days, I would be a happy, happy girl. LOVE the Jack Caffrey series so much, and the addition of Flea just makes them better. I'm sad that this is the next to the last book in the series, though, Mo....get to writin'!!

Admittedly, it had been a long time since I last read a Mo Hayder book so it's hard to compare to her previous works since I can't remember them. However, this hardly felt like a Jack Caffery book. He's hardly even mentioned in the first third of the book.

Flea and Caffery have it out this book and while they are in a very unusual situation, I still can't understand why one of them seems always mad at the other.

The twist in this book was unexpected for most of the book, but the motives were completely glossed over.

I remember being blown away by Mo Hayder's earlier works. I wonder if I've changed or if her writing has.

a little disappointed with this jack caffery novel, in comparison to the ones leading up to this one. still a good read though, plenty of twists and turns .
the one part of the story that was just too far fetched was what happened to AJ and Penny in the tree this book didn't really seem to focus as much on jack and all of his dilemmas but more of the relationship between AJ and Melanie.

One of the better JC books, but not up to Gone standard and nowhere near The Treatment or Birdman.
A very slow start what with the brand new characters and new setting.
The bad guy was quite obvious as there were a lot of clues. This was a bit disappointing as I found the reveal of the baddie in the previous book (Gone) to be done very well.
Also the lack of motive for the things the baddie ended up doing rankled a bit. There was a wee bit of an explanation given but I would have liked a bit more backstory.

3 stars - not the best/or worst instalment in the series but a bit blah.

I love Mo Hayder's terrifying imagination and will read anything she writes. This novel wasn't her finest, but was enjoyable.
