dnf at 30% i’ve read all the rave about it but it just wasn’t good, it didn’t make any sense, the characters had no personality and caleb was just clueless of everything around him. stopped reading because it felt rushed and there was no flavour or personality to it

Cora Rose is a new to me author and definitely one that I'll check out their other stories, since this was a really entertaining one.

Yes there were some vagueness (plot holes) when it came to Whit's past, yes Caleb was repeating a lot on how he felt like that only for Whit and no one but Whit, BUT I do have a weak spot and fondness for characters like Caleb.

I can't help but love how they get stuck in a problem, work it out within themselves and just plow through everything, never letting anything deter them, especially when they have an amazing family to support them. Really Caleb's family is the best and can't wait to dive into the other stories since from what I've seen they are even better than this one.

Suspending disbelief yall for sure, and I'm a difficult customer when it comes in doing that, but listening to the story helped, not only because of the amazing narrators, but I'm not the most attentive listener. I mean who hasn't gotten lost doing something and not listening? Anyways not a story to take seriously but just to have fun for a time.

Review:
This is not my first Cora Rosa book, but I am surprised this is her debut story, it was so good! From almost the start, I absolutely loved Caleb, his ridiculous puppy energy and slightly unhinged behaviour with his cousins. The fact his was a complete cuddle slut was what completely sold me on him and this story - it was done so well, so often, and I just melted every time he melted in Whit's arms. Whit took a lot longer to come around for me. I didn't dislike him, but we really know so little about him for so long. We did get his POV a few times, which I wasn't expecting, and I enjoyed what it brought to the story, but I am also so excited for the companion book to this, Caleb, where we will follow Whit.

The literal only reason I shaved off a quarter star from this book was that the 3ABU resolution was the end of the story, and not a little before the end. I always want (need) to have those kinds of things resolved, and then just a little bit more where we can see them moving forward, before the epilogue. I also wanted a little bit more explanation and grovelling on Whit's part, but that's fine. I absolutely loved their little thing, going from fake boyfriends after Whit took care of Caleb when he got really sick, to fake fiances when Caleb was hospitalised. I absolutely eat up the I'm-his-fiance-so-I-can-see-him-in-hospital trope, I don't care if it's cliche, I will eat it up always. I am so silly and didn't realise that Magnus and Maggie, the MC in the next story, are the same person, and I am so excited the little firecracker gets his own story with the bizarre Sem. I am really looking forward to the rest of the series too, and hopefully Cora will become an auto-buy if I love all her other stories as much as I loved this one!

My favourite part about this book was how absolutely needy Caleb was. He wanted to touch and cuddle Whit every second of every minute of every day. He was insatiable, and every time he had the opportunity to crawl on top of Whit, he made excessive use of it. It was very cute and endearing.

Caleb and Whit are very much opposites when it comes to their personalities. Whit is stoic, grumpy and always in control, while Caleb is energetic, chaotic and extrovert. They match surprisingly well together, and their personality-clash results in quite a few humorous interactions between them.
Whit is also the more dominant one between them, while Caleb is happy to submit a little, which is interesting since Caleb is bigger and bulkier than Whit. This size-difference was also quite cute when it came to Caleb always wanting to cuddle up to Whit, since it meant that he was kind of crushing the guy in the process. Nonetheless, Whit was always all too happy to oblige.

The reason I didn’t love this, though, was because the more serious stuff wasn’t really well-developed. Whit’s history of abuse, self-harm and suicide attempts were not only glossed over by the book itself, but also by Caleb. This did not sit right with me, and really gave the book a strong superficial feel to it. It seemed to me that it was lacking some much needed depth.
The same thing could be said about Caleb and Whit’s relationship in general: they did not have a super strong emotional connection, and it was mostly just obsession and lust between them. I didn’t mind it too much, but I would have preferred it if the obsession was coupled with a little more depth rather than sex.

I definitely liked the beginning of this book more than the end. Their dynamic got a little repetitive after a while, and the story also became a bit too dramatic and over-the-top for my liking.

'Unexpected' series:
1. Whit - 3.0 stars
2. Sem - 3.5 stars
3. Emery - 4.5 stars
4. Luke - 1.5 stars

I had Cora Rose on my tbr list for a while now and seeing her attending RARE Paris in 2024 I thought it was about time to finally start reading her.

So Whit was my first book by Cora Rose and I really enjoyed it! It has an easy flow and easy to like characters. However, as we mostly have Caleb's POV he was more "accessible" for me and I wished I had more insights into Whit's thoughts. Yet I think the way the story played out we did get a perfect dose of Whit's POV. I really enjoyed Caleb's ridiculousness, how he baited Whit all the time and how he got Whit come out of his shell.

I wish I could give it more than 4 stars, because the writing style to me was really captivating. But I have some issues that keep me from giving more stars:
1. Character development: we get a good dose of Whit and Caleb together, but even after finishing the book, I have a hard time describing their characters. It feels like we only got to see their surface. And I wished for more depth. More of who they are.
2. Their relationship: Besides their physical attraction and that they basked in the affection of the other, what traits of the other made them fall in love?
3. Their background: both Caleb and Whit's background story fell a little short. I think both pasts played an important part on who they are now. I could have taken some more insights and how it shaped them, how it still influences their present.
4. The end: it felt rushed and cut short. Definitely had potential for more

These are some things I want to mention in this review. Nevertheless Whit is a great book and absolutely worth reading and recommending!
