Needed more focus and attention for a book with slower writing style and small text than I had at that moment. Will try read again because I enjoyed East of Eden.

Somehow I never read this book until being in my 50s and I really enjoyed both the story and the writing. John Steinbeck was a fabulous writer and really showed the plight of tenant farmers from the mid-west during the Dust Bowl. The reason socialism was popular then and the need for unions is highlighted. I like his short social justice commentaries interspersed within the storyline. Not only do we see the plight of the displaced tenant farmers, but also the ordinary people in California whose jobs were threatened by the flood of people desperate to work for anything. Cruelty was bound to happen when it became a fight for survival on one side and a fight for a reasonable standard of living on the other. Of course the winners were the rich landowners that exploited everyone. A Dickens for that time period. Definitely worth a read. Also, I was amazed at how closely the old movie followed the book. I didn't think that was possible!
