This is my first time reading J A Baker but definitely not my last.
Fiona and Neil move to the small island community of Winter's End, in order to escape their past and start fresh. Fiona is wracked with guilt over her misdeads and feels like everyone can read her guilt on her. No one in this rustic community should be know anything about them and Neil is all for staying positive and making new friends.
The thing is...the community has its own dark history and Fiona is warned that she should leave the island. Women Fiona's age, on the island, are scarce. In recent years they have either died tragically or disappeared all together. It is a community in constant mourning and unease, but someone must know something and Fiona sets to start asking questions.
I was very happy with the ending of this story, which unexpectedly developed some Ed Kemper (US serial killer) vibes.

soooooo slow it took me forever to read this book. scanned most of the pages. i didn’t like how the end of nearly every chapter ended with “…and if only i knew this would this end up bad for me” “…if only i knew asking this question would lead to something terrible.” also, ending was very predictable and i guessed the killer way before reveal.
Oooh nice and creepy and had my brain thinking of all the different things going on.
The atmosphere of the island and the people around.
Some more creepy than others. But is it small village and don’t want strangers around or more than that?
Excellent book. JA Baker wrote a dark and interesting book here.

I have only recently started reading J.A. Baker's works, but I am glad I have because she is a talented author. This thriller kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time. The plot twists and characters all worked out perfectly. I suggest all lovers of thrillers should read this; the book was well worth my time.

This book has such an intriguing cover and it caught my attention right away. Flowers on a path leading up to a lighted house surrounded by dark. You know something bad is going to happen. A husband and wife try to start a new life on a tiny island. The residents are not welcoming, especially to women. A closed island mystery, the couple must both heal their relationship and find out what is going on with the island. I loved the author’s descriptive writing style. I could picture to scenes playing out and feel the emotions of the characters. A great story!
