it's weird to feel sentimental about this book, and i'd imagine i'm one of very few people who does so. i read this book quite a few times when i was young (read: way too young, like 8 or 9) and never really understood it. it was given to my dad as a joke gift as he was quite a stiff guy at times and the style of humour didn't mesh with him at all.

rereading it now, in 2021, with him now passed away and me nearly 30, the book hits different. it's the same worn copy but i can relate to a lot of the themes of being a big guy in a world that doesn't entirely feel made for people like me. a lot of the jokes don't land in the way they used to, and the advent of smartphones and the destruction of culture gives it a really anachronistic feel. it's actually far less probbo than you'd expect, but it's not exactly enlightened.

it's an odd read and the content varies pretty widely, but i felt really nostalgic while reading it. that might have inflated my points a little, but i enjoyed the experience.
