Medical thriller that flies along.

3.5 stars.

I have loved Terry's YA work, and chose this on that basis. The audio version moved along quickly but I wasn't keen on the female voice taking on the male parts, a little jarring and they didn't sound right to my ear, not every narrator pulls off both genders well.

Still, a good premise, with young adult Saphy sped through the process of a heart transplant when one becomes available after (who she suspects of being) her donor is attacked and later dies in hospital. The reader knows that this is in fact the case, with Flora attacked by, supposedly, a man who loved her.

Saphy gets little time to enjoy her renewed vigour and life. The donor's family get in touch, wanting to meet her. And to ask her to both get to know them and to help in their quest to quash the worries about the organ donation that has cropped up since their daughter/sister's death and organ removal.

Then Saphy learns of the attacks of another of Flora's organ recipients. And that the possible attacker who allowed her own new heart to be given to her may not have been Flora's killer after all...

I guessed the 'real' identify of the nefarious party very early on, and did find some elements of the book a little silly - Saphy feeling she was turning into her donor. The part I DID like - debate over organ donation, didn't go anywhere in particular, which I thought was a shame.

The narration was split between Saphy and Flora's sister, which kept the story flowing and different perspectives giving us further clues and insight along the way, and the several storylines did move well together and eventually join.

But this for me wasn't hugely memorable, though I did enjoy the listen. Fairly standard for the genre, with a fairly rushed ending and female voice unsuited to male characters.

With thanks to Netgalley for providing a sample audio copy.

This thriller has a lot going on, but Teri Terry does a great job of structuring it and connects the dots without using coincidence. This is a fast-paced, suspenseful thriller that is perfect for fans of twists, turns.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Saphy receives a life saving transplant from another young women, Flora. What Saphy doesn't know, is the circumstances around Flora's death and shrouded in mystery. The more she and the donor family dig, the more lies and secrets are uncovered. When other patients that received organs from Flora start getting attacked and dying, Saphy realises she is in serious danger.

The first half of the book is quite slow, overdrawn and some parts didn't seem incredibly necessary. There is a lot of backstory to get through, including lots of friends and family on both sides making it really drag on as we are not only focusing on Flora and her secrets, but Saphy and her upbringing as well. Once we start getting to a little bit of action, the story moves smoothly and was excellent. The last 40-50% felt like a completely different book! Luckily too, as that is what ended up also saving my rating here.

I jumped between audio and ebook for this one, even using both at once during some points. I loved the audio, the narrator did an excellent job to making sure no one was confused for anyone else, she was very clear too.

The Patient is for fans of Kierstan Modglin, Freida McFadden and Stacy Willingham. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Teri Terry for an advanced copy. This one is available now.

The Patient was deep dive into the world of organ donation and how it affects the lives of everyone involved.

The main character, Saphy, is in need of a heart transplant. From her point of view the reader sees how it feels to be on a donor list and receive the call that your organ has been obtained. We see what the surgical process entails and then how drastically life is changed afterwards.

The reader also unveils this story from the point of view of the organ donors sister, Fern. Fern’s sister was murdered and the circumstances around her organ donation were questionable at best. The reader follows Fern as she tried to solve her sister’s murder and tries to process the fact that another woman is walking around with her beating heart in her chest.

The story is a slow burn thriller. It spends a lot of time introducing the reader to each of the character’s lives pre and post transplant so you learn to love and empathize with both individually as your slowly lured into a beautifully shocking revelation at the very end.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this fantastic book!

A super quick twisty read.

This book had the shortest chapters I've had I'm a book which made for an enjoyable reading experience as it made reading the book very quick indeed; I really enjoyed the dual perspectives of the book as this also made you want to read even more.

I felt like the author had me guessing the whole way through with one of the reveals really shocking me (I had guessed one of the reveals but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book); it was a bit farfetched that everything was all connected but that was the only negative.

*Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and Teri Terry for the copy of this book. All views are my own.*

I was excited to read this book, but it fell short for me. The synopsis had me really interested and I thought this would be a really exciting book, but it was a slow burn. I would say 3/4  of the book was spent developing characters. I listened to the audiobook, and the first twist didn’t happen until I was 75% done with the book. I guess I just expected more.

I was drawn to this book as soon as I read the synopsis and I love the cover!

The story is told in dual POV from Saphy who is the patient and Fern who is the sister of Flora, the organ donor.

Saphy is invited along to meet Flora’s family and once she learns her identity she soon becomes a bit obsessed in learning more about her. I don’t want to say much more and ruin it.

This is a slow burn but I really enjoyed the build up, I really thought I knew what was going to happen. I was proved completely wrong, as I usually am.

The ending totally threw me, I didn’t see it coming at all. If you love a slow burn psychological thriller I recommend this one.

Thank you to Bookouture for inviting me onto the tour and for my gifted ebook.
