So, I don't remember liking this movie very much whenever I watched it 30 years ago or so. Perhaps a re-watch is in order now that I've read it, b/c the book was very good. I can see why people really like Grisham now that I'm digging into his collection. His books are smart but he makes them VERY easy to read for the masses. It was this complicated intricate lawyerly plot but it felt like a beach read. That's no easy task. And really - it's what makes the great writers.....so great. I find his books to be pretty similar to James Patterson in style, another deeply famous author that I'm just beginning to read in recent years. That is to say, super easy reads that pull you in from the start and are pretty difficult to put down. For me it was 4 stars instead of 5 just b/c the end got a little haywire. I didn't dislike the ending but I felt like it was a little bit of a letdown for all the build up. It was a bit of a hasty end. Still, he did put a nice bow on things and used all the right characters to do so. Overall, a really enjoyable book. Although I do think it needs to be pointed out that Mitch, our "hero" - he's not really a good guy and far from innocent in all this. I mean, he puts his career ahead of his wife, he's a dick to his in-laws, he cheats on his wife, he steals 10 million dollars, and he's an accomplice to murder. But other that THAT - I guess he's the good guy in the story. No wonder our society is so warped. Ha. And I think this book boils down to a basic life lesson - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Looking forward to the next Grisham.

The Firm by John Grisham (1993).

4/5 stars from me

Though I knew it was a bestselling book of the 90s with a highly-praised movie adaptation starring Tom Cruise, I had mistakenly thought it would be a typical legal thriller pitting a cop against a victim. I was pleasantly surprised that the main character was both a goodie and a baddie. While it’s not a great work of literary fiction, clearly that it's a thriller novel tailored for a mainstream audience.

The pacing is captivating. Initially, you're immersed in the unfamiliar world the protagonist finds himself in. Andwhile he's young and somewhat arrogant, you believe he's earned that confidence. Then comes the plot twist, and the narrative takes off. The final 200 pages are exhilarating. The mark of a great thriller is when you finish it, you feel like you just stepped off a ride.

I'm looking forward to watching the movie next.

A fun classic. I kinda wanna watch the movie if it didn’t have Tom Cruise in it.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF at 111 pages in.

I wanted to like this. Especially since it's been made into a movie, but I just couldn't get into it. For someone who was top 3 of his class at Harvard Law, Mitch can be rather dense.

An entertaining read. Won't be reading it again as most parts of the book is not very logical. Why would such an intelligent guy not suspect anything when the offer is too good to be true? Also, how is it that a fresh grad seems to have more experience and know-how than the FBI and the mafia ( who have been running this for years)? Why add the bit on the affair when it added so little to the plot (and ruined Mitch's relatibility)? That being said I did enjoy the pace of this book and I did finish reading it.
